Why I am Voting for Unity
"If you believe in avoiding division within the UFT, Unity’s stance might resonate with you." - Emile Fici, Special Educator, former Paraprofessional and current Chapter Leader
Before changing my career path, I had many friends who were teachers. All I ever heard from them was how great the benefits were and how strong the teachers' union was. At the age of 35, I decided to take the leap and became a paraprofessional. I was fortunate to have a wonderful Chapter Leader, Mr. Amato, who left a lasting impression on me. He cared deeply about my rights. I vividly remember him urging me to complete the necessary paperwork to avoid falling under Tier 6 before the system changed, and I’m so grateful I followed his advice. He always looked out for the members in our building, offering guidance and support that meant the world to me.
Fast forward nearly 15 years, and I’m now a teacher and a Chapter Leader myself. I became a Chapter Leader because I saw the need to support other members like myself and to provide the proper information and guidance that every member has the right to receive. Unfortunately, I know all too well what happens when this support is missing. Before stepping into this role, I dealt with a Chapter Leader who often misdirected me and pushed back whenever I asked questions. That experience made me realize I wasn't being equipped with the tools I needed to succeed. I ended up seeking help directly from the UFT, which was instrumental in guiding me when I had questions.
Some people are quick to point fingers at Unity for any misinformation or lack of support they experience. But the truth is, it’s not Unity that misguides members—it’s individuals who aim to sabotage the union, which has been a pillar of strength for NYC teachers since its founding in 1960. The United Federation of Teachers was created to advocate for the rights and interests of teachers and education professionals, and it continues to do so to this day.
The decision to vote for Unity within the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) typically reflects support for a union caucus that prioritizes experience, established leadership, and a specific set of policies regarding educators' rights, professional development, and advocacy for public education. Here are some reasons members might choose to vote for Unity UFT:
Consistency in Leadership
Unity has a long-standing presence in the UFT and is known for maintaining stability and continuity in leadership. If you value proven systems and consistent advocacy, Unity’s track record might align with your priorities.
Negotiation Strength
Unity’s experience in negotiating contracts and advocating for better wages, benefits, and working conditions may instill confidence in its ability to effectively represent educators’ interests.
Focus on Collaboration
Unity emphasizes collaboration with city and state officials while still pushing for educators’ rights. If you prefer a pragmatic approach that balances advocacy with maintaining working relationships, this could be a deciding factor.
Resources and Support
Unity UFT often highlights its role in expanding professional development opportunities, protecting members through grievance procedures, and securing resources for schools and teachers.
Track Record on Key Issues
Unity has played a role in addressing major issues such as reducing class sizes, securing pension benefits, and fighting for equitable funding for public schools. Support for Unity might stem from agreement with its approach to these issues.
Union Solidarity
Unity champions the importance of union solidarity and the idea that a unified front strengthens the union’s ability to advocate effectively. If you believe in avoiding division within the UFT, Unity’s stance might resonate with you.
Check out Emily’s Latest on Premium Free Healthcare
My husband’s job wants $1100 a month to cover our family for health insurance. No thanks. My teacher friend in Long Island pays $800 a month. Even as a retiree from Philadelphia public schools, my aunt pays over $300 a month. And the benefits I get as compared to my sister—who works for a fortune 50 health insurance company (ironic)—well, watch and find out. The premium-free, bomb-ass health insurance I have as a UFT member has saved my life and my bank account. Let’s take a minute to understand what it means to have access to this healthcare, how hard we have to fight to keep it, and why fighting off ridiculous price gauging by insurance companies works in all of our favor. If you’re a UFT member, what has premium-free health care meant for you?
